Turtuni Story: Planning for economic development and biodiversity of the Tiwi Islands

2022-2024.

Alana was part of a multidisciplinary research team working in partnership with Tiwi Resources and Tiwi Rangers to conduct research to support decision making in relation to biodiversity and development in the Tiwi Islands in the Northern Territory, Australia.

The team engaged with both Indigenous and Western scientific knowledges and methods to document goals, values, and aspirations for land and sea management; model and map important species, ecosystems, and places; and explore the impacts of scenarios of change and management.

Alana's work in this project involved close collaboration with Tiwi community based researcher Mavis Kerinaiua to develop ‘The Turtuni Story', a Tiwi perspective on caring for country and working cross-culturally with Tiwi Murrukupuni (Country) and Winga (Saltwater).
